What is a Pulpotomy & Pulpectomy?

Inside every baby and permanent adult tooth is a central chamber containing connective tissue, a nerve supply, and blood vessels. Collectively these core tissues, known as the “dental pulp, help the tooth to grow and mature before it emerges into the mouth. Once your tooth is in place, the dental pulp provides nourishment, keeps the tooth vital, and alerts you of problems. A pulpotomy or a pulpectomy is recommended if there is damage or decay to the root and/or crown of the tooth.

Your child’s primary teeth may need to be restored if they have suffered severe decay or trauma.

Treatment Options for Tooth Decay or Trauma

Your Blue Coral Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics dentist will take a series of X-rays to determine the extent of the problem and then recommend either a pulpotomy or a pulpectomy as a treatment.

Pulpotomy

A pulpotomy is recommended if the damage or decay is limited to the crown of the tooth. If a cavity is very deep and close to the pulp of the tooth or into the pulp, it can cause inflammation and irritation of the pulpal tissue. The pulpotomy involves the removal of inflamed pulp chambers, which are usually found on baby molars. Your Blue Coral Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics dentist will only remove the infected pulp from the crown but leave the healthy root. A pulpotomy will be performed on a baby molar. The empty space will then be filled with dental cement, and a crown made of stainless steel will be attached to the tooth.

Pulpectomy

A pulpectomy is an option if the infection affects tissue at both the root and crown of the tooth. A pulpectomy involves removing all pulp material from the roots and crown. After anesthesia, your child’s dentist will extract the pulp and nerve tissue from both the crown and the canals of their roots. Next, the pulp chamber will be cleaned thoroughly and disinfected. Your Blue Coral Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics dentist will then fill the tooth root and pulp chamber with dental cement and crown it with stainless steel.
